Frame selection and sizing

The selected pictures are represented as timed GIF images. A GIF image uses indexed color with no more than 256 entries in its active color table, so colors may be approximated and smooth gradients can show banding or grain. Frame delays are expressed in hundredths of a second. Consequently, some requested frame rates cannot be represented by perfectly equal, exact GIF delays.

Limits and checks

  • Do not interpret a smaller width, height, or frame count as a guarantee of a smaller file than the MP4. Duration, motion, image complexity, and palette changes also affect GIF size.
  • The output cannot preserve narration, music, or other audio because the GIF format has no audio track. Keep or share the MP4 when sound carries essential information.
  • The chosen frame rate may be approximate in the saved animation. GIF delay units are one hundredth of a second, and viewers can also differ in how they display extremely short delays.

Common questions

Will the converted GIF include the MP4's sound?

No. Animated GIF stores a sequence of images and timing information, but it has no provision for an audio track. The visual portion can be converted while narration, music, and sound effects are omitted. If recipients need synchronized sound, use the original MP4 or another video format instead of GIF.

Why can the GIF be larger than the source MP4?

MP4 is a container commonly used for video compression that can represent changes across time efficiently. GIF represents palette-based image frames and is often less economical for photographic footage, long clips, or scenes with constant motion. Lowering the output dimensions, frame rate, or clip duration can help, but the resulting size depends on the actual pictures.
