Length & Distance Converter expresses one physical span in another supported unit, covering the site's metric and imperial choices such as meters, feet, and miles. Select the unit attached to the original number, choose the output unit, and enter the magnitude. The converter applies the fixed scale relationship and reports the equivalent number; the underlying distance remains identical. It converts measurements, not distances between locations. A common trap is reading decimal feet as feet-and-inches: 5.5 feet is 5 feet 6 inches, but 5.10 feet is only 5 feet 1.2 inches.

Source and target direction

The source selection tells the converter what the entered number already represents, while the target selection states how that length should be reported. For miles to feet, the scale factor is 5,280; for feet to miles, it is 1/5,280. Swapping the selections therefore changes the calculation, not merely the displayed unit label. Length conversions use scaling without a temperature-style offset.

Decimals and precision

Metric-to-metric conversions commonly use powers of ten, whereas conversions between metric and imperial units may produce longer decimals. A displayed decimal may be exact or rounded, depending on the selected unit ratio and input. Keep more digits than the final context requires when using the result in another calculation. Changing units cannot recover precision that was absent from the original measurement.

Good uses

  • Converting a room length recorded in meters into feet before comparing it with dimensions printed on an imperial floor plan.
  • Changing a road distance stated in miles into meters for a metric-only mapping, surveying, or engineering worksheet.
  • Checking whether metric and imperial product specifications describe the same cable, pipe, rope, board, or fabric length before ordering.

Limits and checks

  • Confirm both unit selections before copying the number: 10 feet expressed in meters is the reciprocal-direction problem from 10 meters expressed in feet.
  • Do not type compound notation such as 5 ft 10 in as 5.10 feet; decimal fractions of a foot and inches use different place values.
  • A rounded result may not return digit-for-digit to the original value when converted back; a small mismatch can come solely from decimal rounding.

Common questions

Should I enter 5 feet 10 inches as 5.10 feet?

No. In decimal feet, digits after the point are fractions of a foot, not inches. Ten inches is 10/12 of a foot, so 5 feet 10 inches equals 5.833333... feet. It also equals 70 inches if inches is available as a source unit. Enter one of those single-unit forms rather than 5.10 feet.

Why does the result have more digits than my input?

Some unit ratios produce long decimals even from a short input. Those digits describe the conversion calculation; they do not make a measured distance more precise. Retain enough digits to avoid intermediate rounding, then report a result consistent with the precision of the source measurement. For a quantity defined exactly, additional digits may legitimately be useful.
