Direction determines the adjustment
The time-zone change indicates whether the travel schedule requires an earlier or later body-clock adjustment. The calculator uses that direction to place sleep and light-exposure periods around the journey. Light is not interchangeable across the day: exposure at different biological times can shift circadian timing in different directions, so the recommended windows should be read as timed targets.
