What Traditional IRA Calculator does and how it behaves

Estimate how a traditional IRA may grow before retirement, then examine required minimum distributions and the income tax impact of withdrawals. The projection connects contributions, assumed investment growth, deductible contribution treatment, distribution timing, and withdrawal tax assumptions. The common surprise is that the projected account balance is generally a pretax amount, not the amount available to spend. Entering contributions as deductible also does not confirm that they qualify for a deduction; eligibility depends on the taxpayer's income, filing status, and workplace retirement-plan coverage.

How the result is produced

1

Accumulation projection

The growth projection carries the entered IRA balance and planned contributions through the selected time period using the assumed investment return. Contribution deductibility belongs to the tax analysis; it does not change the number of contributed dollars held in the account. When comparing scenarios, change one assumption at a time so the effect of contributions, time, or return remains identifiable.

2

Distribution and tax projection

The retirement projection uses the estimated account value to examine withdrawals, including required minimum distributions when applicable. Applying the withdrawal tax assumption distinguishes a gross distribution from its estimated after-tax value. This is scenario analysis rather than a tax return calculation: taxable income, withholding, deductions, and other income can make the actual tax attributable to a distribution different.

Good uses

  • Compare maintaining planned traditional IRA contributions with reducing or stopping them before retirement, while holding the return and retirement date assumptions constant.
  • Estimate how required minimum distributions could affect the account balance and taxable retirement income over a projected withdrawal period.
  • Compare a desired gross IRA withdrawal with its estimated after-tax proceeds before setting a retirement spending target.

Limits and checks

  • Do not treat the deductible-contribution setting as an eligibility decision. Traditional IRA deduction rules depend on facts the projection may not capture, including filing status, income, and workplace plan participation.
  • Projected growth is not guaranteed. Investment returns vary, and the order of gains and losses can materially change balances and withdrawals even when a long-term average appears reasonable.
  • An RMD projection is not a compliance instruction. Confirm the applicable starting date, account treatment, distribution factor, and any beneficiary or spouse-related rules for the relevant tax year.

Common questions

Does the calculator determine whether my traditional IRA contribution is deductible?

No. It can model contributions as tax-deductible for projection purposes, but deduction eligibility requires information about income, tax filing status, workplace retirement-plan coverage, and the applicable tax year. A contribution can still be permitted when its deduction is limited or unavailable, so contribution eligibility and deduction eligibility should not be treated as the same question.

Is the projected after-tax withdrawal the amount I will actually receive?

Not necessarily. It is an estimate based on the withdrawal and tax assumptions entered. The actual result can depend on total taxable income, deductions, state taxes, withholding choices, early-distribution rules, and tax law in the withdrawal year. Required minimum distributions specify an amount that must be distributed, but they do not by themselves establish the final tax bill.
