What IP Address Lookup & Geolocation does and how it behaves

Your browser's current public-facing IP address is the lookup target. The page presents that address with an estimated geographic location, autonomous system number (ASN), ISP or network name, reverse DNS information, and a map. It associates the observed address with available network and location records. These results describe the internet connection's visible endpoint, not necessarily the device or person using it. The most common surprise is the map pin, which may represent an ISP gateway, corporate network, or VPN exit rather than your physical location.

How the result is produced

Observed public address

The lookup begins with the public-facing IP associated with the browser session. This can differ from an address shown inside a home or office network because routers, carrier-grade NAT, VPNs, and proxies may present another egress address to the internet. The result therefore characterizes the public endpoint visible to outside services.

Associated network records

The tool displays available metadata associated with the address. The ASN identifies the autonomous system announcing the relevant network prefix, while the ISP or organization field names an associated network operator. Reverse DNS shows a hostname from DNS PTR information when one exists. The map plots the reported IP geolocation, which is an estimate rather than a device-derived position.

Good uses

  • Check whether enabling or disabling a VPN changed the public IP, network operator, ASN, and approximate exit location seen by websites.
  • Record the current public IP for a support case, firewall allowlist request, or investigation involving the address from which your connection appears to originate.
  • Inspect ISP, ASN, reverse DNS, and regional information when a website assigns the wrong region or reports an unexpected network provider.

Limits and checks

  • Do not treat the mapped location as a street address or proof of where a device is located. IP geolocation may resolve only to a city, region, network facility, or provider gateway.
  • A public IP can be dynamic or shared by many customers through carrier-grade NAT. The result may change over time and does not uniquely identify a subscriber, household, browser, or person.
  • ASN, ISP, and reverse DNS fields answer different questions. Provider names may reflect an upstream carrier, reseller, hosting company, employer, or VPN operator, and reverse DNS may be absent, generic, or outdated.

Common questions

Does the map reveal my exact physical location?

No. The map represents location data associated with the public IP address, not GPS or another precise device position. Its pin may correspond to the correct city, but it can also indicate a nearby region, an ISP facility, a corporate gateway, or a VPN exit point. It should be treated as an approximation.

Why is the displayed ISP or location different from what I expect?

The visible address may belong to a VPN, proxy, mobile carrier, corporate gateway, reseller, or upstream network rather than the company name on your bill. Network routing and address registration can also place an address in a different region. The result can be correct for the public egress network even when it does not describe your local connection.
