What IP Address Lookup does and how it behaves

IP Address Lookup reports the addresses visible for the current browser session, separating the Internet-facing public IP from any local address the browser exposes. It also shows geolocation, ISP, and network information associated with the public address. The common surprise is that IP geolocation is not device location. It may represent an ISP gateway, corporate network, VPN exit, or broadly assigned region, and it can change without the device moving. A local address applies within the nearby network and is not normally usable as a public destination.

Public and local addresses

The public value represents the address through which this browser session reaches Internet services. A router, carrier-grade NAT system, proxy, or VPN can make it different from an address assigned directly to the device. A local value belongs to the device's nearby network context. These values answer different questions, so they should not be expected to match or remain constant.

Network attribution

Location, ISP, and network labels describe records associated with the public IP or its allocated address block. They do not establish the browser's physical coordinates or the identity of its user. A residential address may be attributed to a carrier, while a VPN may be attributed to its exit provider. Reassigned address blocks can also produce stale or geographically broad results.

Good uses

  • Record the apparent public IPv4 or IPv6 address while troubleshooting an IP allowlist, rejected login, or service access rule.
  • Check whether connecting to or disconnecting from a VPN changes the browser's public address, provider attribution, and approximate region.
  • Compare local and public addresses when investigating router NAT, carrier-grade NAT, or an unexpected path between a device and the Internet.

Limits and checks

  • Do not interpret the reported city or region as a GPS reading. IP geolocation commonly identifies an allocation area, provider facility, or network exit instead of the device.
  • A local value is not necessarily private: a device can have a globally routable IPv6 address on a local interface. Private IPv4 addresses, such as 192.168.1.10, can be reused simultaneously on many unrelated networks.
  • Local-address visibility depends on what the browser exposes. Browser privacy protections or network conditions may hide, limit, or obscure local address information.

Common questions

Why are my public and local IP addresses different?

They identify different sides of the connection. The local address identifies the device within its nearby network, while the public address identifies the Internet-facing path used by that network. A router commonly translates between them. VPNs, proxies, and carrier-grade NAT can add further layers, so several devices may appear under one public address.

Can this lookup identify my exact location or the person using an address?

No. The location is an estimate associated with an IP address or address block, not a precise device position. ISP and network labels identify network attribution rather than a subscriber. Public addresses may be dynamic, shared, routed through a company, or presented by a VPN, so the result cannot by itself establish a person's identity.
