What Expense Tracker Dashboard does, with a checked example
Small purchases become easier to inspect when they are recorded with a date, amount, merchant, and category tag. The Expense Tracker Dashboard rolls those entries into a monthly summary, category breakdowns, spending-trend charts, and a top-merchants view. It answers what was recorded, where it was categorized, and when spending occurred. The usual surprise is that every view is only as complete as its entries: a missing purchase, duplicate, incorrectly dated refund, or inconsistent merchant label can distort several summaries at once.
Worked example
A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.
Input
Enter these records:
Date: 2026-08-03; Merchant: Corner Cafe; Category: Food; Amount: $12.00
Date: 2026-08-04; Merchant: City Transit; Category: Transport; Amount: $8.00
->
Expected output
August 2026 total: $20.00. Category totals: Food $12.00; Transport $8.00.
$12.00 plus $8.00 equals $20.00. Both expenses have August 2026 dates, and each category total contains its single assigned expense.
