What Education Tax Credit Calculator does, with a checked example

Compare the American Opportunity Tax Credit, or AOTC, with the Lifetime Learning Credit, or LLC, using qualified education expenses, filing status, and modified adjusted gross income. The calculator first determines each tentative credit from the expense amount, then models any income phase-out. The two displayed estimates should not be added together. They are alternative results for one student because the same student cannot receive both credits for the same tax year.

Worked example

A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.

Input

Filing status: Single
Modified adjusted gross income: $60,000
Qualified education expenses: $4,000

Expected output

American Opportunity Tax Credit: $2,500
Lifetime Learning Credit: $800

The AOTC is $2,000 on the first $2,000 plus $500 on the next $2,000. The LLC is 20 percent of $4,000, or $800; at the stated income, neither amount is reduced by the income phase-out.

How the result is produced

1

Expense formulas

For the AOTC, the tentative amount is 100 percent of the first $2,000 of qualified expenses and 25 percent of the next $2,000, capped at $2,500 per eligible student. For the LLC, it is 20 percent of up to $10,000 of qualified expenses, capped at $2,000 per tax return.

2

Income phase-out

After calculating the tentative credits, the calculator applies the phase-out associated with the entered filing status and modified adjusted gross income. Income below the applicable range leaves the tentative amount unchanged, income within the range reduces it proportionally, and income at or above the upper boundary reduces the credit to zero.

Good uses

  • Compare the two tentative credits for an undergraduate student's tuition before preparing Form 8863.
  • Estimate the LLC for graduate study, continuing education, or an eligible job-skills course.
  • Test how different modified adjusted gross income estimates could affect an education credit during tax planning.

Limits and checks

  • Enter only qualified expenses remaining after tax-free educational assistance. Scholarships, grants, employer assistance, and other tax benefits can change the usable amount.
  • A calculated AOTC amount does not establish that the student meets its enrollment, degree-year, tax-history, and other eligibility requirements.
  • The estimate is not necessarily the amount added to a refund. The LLC is nonrefundable, while only part of an allowable AOTC may be refundable.

Common questions

Can I claim both displayed credits for the same student?

No. A taxpayer cannot claim both the AOTC and LLC for the same student in the same tax year. A return may claim different credits for different students when each student qualifies and expenses are allocated correctly. Treat the calculator's two figures as a comparison, not as a combined total.

Does the larger estimate identify the credit I should claim?

Not always. The larger mathematical result may be unavailable because of the student's eligibility, prior AOTC claims, filing status, dependency treatment, tax-free assistance, or coordination with another education benefit. The calculator compares amounts from the entered figures; it does not replace the eligibility and expense-allocation rules used on Form 8863.
