How the result is produced

Opening the document

Select a file whose format is DOCX. Unlike a text-input utility, this viewer expects the document file itself because text, styles, images, relationships, and other content are stored together inside the DOCX package. Processing occurs in the browser, so the selected document does not need to be sent to a server merely to be viewed.

Interpreting DOCX content

A DOCX file is an Office Open XML package containing WordprocessingML document parts and related resources. The viewer interprets the supported parts and presents them as a readable document. Layout can depend on fonts, style definitions, page settings, numbering, images, and relationships stored in the file, so two documents with similar text can render differently.

Limits and checks

Do not treat the display as proof that Word will paginate the document identically. Font substitutions and differences in supported layout behavior can change line breaks and page breaks.
Legacy .doc files are not DOCX files. Renaming a .doc file with a .docx extension does not convert its binary format.
Tracked changes, comments, fields, equations, embedded objects, complex shapes, and other advanced features may be incomplete or visually different. Verify critical documents in Word or another full DOCX editor.

Common questions

Can this viewer open an old Microsoft Word .doc file?

No. The tool is for the newer .docx format, which uses the Office Open XML package structure. The older .doc format is a different binary document format. Convert or resave the file as DOCX in software that understands the original DOC file, then open the resulting .docx file in this viewer.

Will the document look exactly the same as it does in Microsoft Word?

Not necessarily. Ordinary text, paragraphs, lists, tables, and images may be sufficient for inspection, but exact layout depends on fonts and the document features the viewer can interpret. If pagination, tracked revisions, fields, equations, embedded content, or print fidelity matters, compare the result in Microsoft Word or another full Office Open XML editor.
