Direct unit conversion

For units connected by a fixed cooking-measure ratio, the converter multiplies the entered quantity by that ratio and labels the result with the selected target unit. The relationship is proportional: doubling the input doubles the output. Selecting the source and target in the wrong order reverses the calculation, so both unit fields should be checked before using the result.

Volume and mass

A volume-to-mass conversion is not determined by the unit names alone. It requires an ingredient density or a stated ingredient-specific equivalence. If the converter presents a result between cups or milliliters and grams or weight ounces, interpret it using any ingredient or basis shown. Equal cup volumes of flour, sugar, and water do not necessarily have equal masses.

Common questions

Can I convert cups directly to grams?

Only when an ingredient-specific density or established weight equivalence is available. Cups describe volume and grams describe mass, so there is no single cup-to-gram factor that works for every food. If no ingredient or conversion basis is identified, the result should not be treated as a universal gram weight. A trusted ingredient weight is preferable for precise baking.

Are ounces in the result fluid ounces or weight ounces?

Do not infer the meaning from the word ounce alone. A fluid ounce is a volume unit, while an ounce converted to or from grams is a mass unit. Check the unit selector and the types of the other units in the conversion. If the interface does not distinguish them, the result may be ambiguous, especially for volume-to-mass conversions.
