Butter package measures

For standard US butter measures, 1 stick equals 1/2 cup or 8 tablespoons. A full cup is therefore 2 sticks or 16 tablespoons. The converter scales these relationships with the entered quantity, so half a stick corresponds to 4 tablespoons and 1/4 cup.

Volume and weight

Grams and weight ounces measure mass, while cups and tablespoons measure volume. Converting a fat between those groups requires an equivalence appropriate to that fat. Butter, oil, and other fats should not automatically receive the same cup-to-gram result. Conversions between grams and ounces do not depend on volume.

Good uses

  • Replacing a recipe's 3/4 cup of butter with the equivalent number of sticks or tablespoons.
  • Finding how many grams of a specified oil to weigh when a recipe gives only a volume.
  • Converting an ounce quantity on a butter package into cups for scaling a baking recipe.

Limits and checks

  • Stick sizes are not universal worldwide. The worked example uses the standard US butter stick of 4 weight ounces.
  • Do not read an output labeled ounces as fluid ounces unless the tool explicitly says so; weight ounces and fluid ounces measure different things.
  • Cup and tablespoon definitions can vary by region, so confirm the recipe's measurement system before relying on a close conversion.

Common questions

Can I treat one stick of butter as one stick of oil?

No. A stick is a conventional packaged-butter quantity, not a universal unit for cooking fats. For oil, start with the recipe's actual volume or weight, such as tablespoons, cups, grams, or ounces. When converting between oil volume and weight, make sure the converter is using the intended type of fat.

Why can a cup of butter and a cup of oil produce different gram values?

A cup measures volume, while a gram measures mass. Equal volumes of different fats need not have equal mass because their densities can differ. The fat identity matters when converting between volume and mass, but not when converting directly between grams and weight ounces. For a cups-to-tablespoons conversion, density does not affect the result.
