What Audio Volume Booster does and how it behaves

This tool raises the amplitude of an audio file by a gain amount you set, or toward a target peak level, then runs a limiter that catches any samples the boost would push past the output ceiling so they don't clip into distortion. It's built for recordings that came in too quiet - a phone memo, a podcast take, a video's dialogue track - rather than for shaping loudness the way a mastering compressor would. The surprise for most users: gain boosts everything equally, so background hiss and room noise come up exactly as much as the voice does.

How the result is produced

Gain control

You set a boost amount in decibels, or a target peak level, and the tool multiplies every sample's amplitude by the corresponding linear factor. This is a uniform scale applied across the whole file - it does not distinguish the voice or instrument you care about from noise sitting underneath it, so both move up together by the same proportion.

Peak limiting

After (or alongside) the gain stage, a limiter watches for samples that would exceed the output ceiling, commonly 0 dBFS, and reduces gain momentarily on just those peaks. This stops hard clipping and the harsh distortion it causes, but only on the moments that would otherwise exceed the ceiling - it is not a substitute for a lower gain setting if peaks are constantly hitting the limiter.

Good uses

  • boosting a quiet voice memo or podcast recording so it plays back at a normal, audible level
  • raising a low dialogue track on a video clip before uploading it to a platform
  • bringing several clips that were recorded at different levels up toward the same target peak, which narrows the gap between them in level even though perceived loudness can still differ

Limits and checks

  • gain raises everything in the signal together, so hiss, room tone, or hum gets louder right along with the voice - it can't tell noise apart from what you actually want boosted
  • peak limiting prevents clipping, it is not loudness normalization: two clips capped at the same peak ceiling can still sound noticeably different in perceived loudness
  • pushing the requested gain far past what the limiter can absorb makes the limiter engage constantly, which produces audible pumping or squashing rather than clean, undistorted loudness

Common questions

Will this fix a recording where the mic gain was set too low?

It makes it louder, yes, but it can't recover detail that was never captured. Any background noise or hiss present in the original file gets amplified right along with the voice, so a very noisy quiet recording will sound louder and noisier, not cleaner.

Does boosting volume also make multiple files match in loudness?

No. Target-level mode aligns files to the same peak, not the same perceived loudness - two files with different dynamics can reach an identical peak and still sound noticeably different. A flat dB boost does even less, since it doesn't align peaks either. Matching how loud files actually sound requires a loudness measurement like LUFS (ITU-R BS.1770), not peak-based gain.
