What Audio Loop Maker does and how it behaves

This tool takes an audio file, lets you mark loop start and end points on the waveform, and blends a short crossfade region where the tail overtakes the head so the seam plays back without a click or pop. A straight trim to matching timestamps almost never loops cleanly, because the waveform's phase and amplitude rarely match exactly at two different points in a recording; crossfading averages the two edges together instead of cutting between them. The detail most people miss: the crossfade region is merged, not appended, so the finished loop ends up shorter than the original selection by the crossfade duration.

Loop point selection and preview

You pick a start and end point on the waveform, by dragging markers or entering timestamps, and the tool plays the selected region on repeat so you can hear exactly where the seam clicks or pops before choosing a crossfade length. This preview loop is what you are actually fixing; the crossfade step only smooths the transition your ear already flagged as rough.

Crossfade blend at the seam

Within the crossfade window you set, the tool fades out the samples just before the end point while fading in the corresponding samples just after the start point, then sums the two into one overlapping region. That merged region replaces both original edges, so the exported loop's length equals the selection length minus the crossfade duration.

Good uses

  • Turning a recorded synth pad, drone, or short drum break into a background loop that repeats without an audible seam.
  • Prepping ambience recordings such as rain, traffic hum, or wind so they loop indefinitely under a video or stream.
  • Making short game-audio or app loops, like footsteps, an engine hum, or UI ambience, that need to cycle cleanly at runtime.

Limits and checks

  • A longer crossfade hides a bigger level mismatch but also shortens the loop and can smear a transient, like a kick drum or plucked note, if it falls inside the fade window; listen for a doubled or blurred hit right at the seam.
  • Crossfading only fixes amplitude and phase discontinuity at the seam; it cannot fix a loop length that doesn't land on a musical beat, so a rhythmic loop can still sound off-tempo even after the click is gone.
  • If the two loop points sit on very different-sounding material, different pitch or texture, the crossfade is still audible as a brief blend rather than a true seam; nudging the start or end point a few milliseconds often helps more than adding crossfade length.

Common questions

Does a longer crossfade always sound better?

No. Past a certain point it starts smearing transients under the fade and can make percussive loops sound mushy at the seam. Start with something short, around 50 to 100ms, and only increase it if a click still remains after preview.

Why is my exported loop shorter than the region I selected?

Because the crossfade window overlaps and merges the tail into the head rather than appending it, so the output length equals your selection minus the crossfade duration. If you need an exact target length, select a slightly longer region before applying the crossfade.
